Akron Presbyterian Church

The parishioners of this one hundred year old wood frame church, frustrated by an unworkable layout, initially planned to demolish the structure. Their emotional attachment to the building and their consultation with the architect as to how to mine additional space from the existing plan inspired them to look past the rundown interior and begin fine tuning their functional program. Every portion of the existing plan was modified in some way in order to clarify the plan and eliminate waste. In addition to improved planning, handicapped access and new cooling and lighting the building was given important symbolic energy with an elaborate set of stained glass windows.
