Art in the
Streets
This whimsical project
made by hand by the designers, Christina Weber and David Wise, was
submitted as part of a design competition and sold at auction to
raise funds for the Historic Lower Downtown District.
Previously unacquainted
but thrown together by the organizing committee the designers worked
by telephone and fax to outline concepts and develop details. Following
an energized and productive synthesis of ideas on paper Christina
wrecked one power tool after another drilling the concrete components
and directed David in assembling the steel struts and warped plywood
components.
The bench form beckons
the user to sit under the protective canopy and then lean back slightly
to read the quotations collected by Ms. Weber and deftly arrayed
in various typefaces.
Communication Arts Magazine
gave the project an Award of Excellence as one of fewer than two
percent of the design projects submitted and included it in their
34th Design Annual publication.
