This project
required detailed analysis of a riverfront site and the rodeo and
animal management criteria. The architect established the solar
orientation of the grandstand, the relationship of the promenade
to the Eagle River and drainage concepts taking into account the
influence of the livestock. The building and arena are designed
to organize an existing set of buildings and to present a clear
and inviting image for the public. Arena lighting was carefully
designed to mitigate glare to surrounding residential areas and
to provide state of the art illumination at the lowest possible
cost. Animals, performers, cowboys, vendors and spectators as well
as the physically handicapped are each accommodated to minimize
conflicts, maximize efficiency, and to enhance the experience of
the rodeo for everyone concerned. Railings, booths, terraces and
canopies were carefully designed to be durable, simple and elegant
and to give the project a sense of design refinement not often found
in rodeo facilities. The tree like steel support of the entry canopies
is evocative of the riverfront setting and cottonwood trees.
