This residence
in the centrally located Hilltop area of Denver has been home to
this family for more than a decade. Dating from the 1930's and in
need of refurbishing and updating in every room the owners chose
to do a complete renovation and extensive additions rather than
leave their neighborhood. The exterior character was transformed
with the addition of a generous room-like porch and a square bay
extension of the dining room as well as a new lantern at the master
suite. Care was taken not to increase the apparent size of the house
relative to the adjacent houses. However in the back the house was
extended out on two levels and down into a large new basement space.
Each added element was carefully designed to fit with the original
house including the selection of used brick to match the existing
painted brick exterior. Every opportunity was taken to reuse existing
space including the replacement of a cramped basement bathroom with
a new wine cellar taking advantage of the original massive concrete
walls on three sides that maintain a constantly monitored temperature
just below sixty degrees. The musty basement was renovated with
a bright new exercise room, guest bedroom and bath and generous
storage areas. Space was added to the main floor for a family room,
screen enclosed dining porch, all new kitchen and a serving pantry
with a wet bar. On the second floor space was added for a new master
suite with generous closets and an all new bath. Many original items
such as door hardware, wood trim and balustrades were completely
restored to preserve the familiar character of the formal areas
of the house.
