| The
military veterans and auxiliary of Washington County, Colorado recognized
the need for a directory in this rural cemetery to guide and shelter
visitors during Memorial Day and other special times of the year.
Through the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars the
pavilion, planting and master plan were commissisioned to resolve
their functional needs. As the design evolved it also became a focal
point on the landscape for important events and commemorations.
Volunteers very precisely fabricated the steel, beams and roof rafters
for the structure and preassembled them with bolted connections
for an expressive finished appearance which many visitors comment
on. A veteran who is a master brick mason helped design the corbelled
brick bench walls on each open side of the pavilion. The distinctive
roof is visible from the main highway nearly one mile away and is
illuminated at night. |
